we no longer classify organisms by traits, but by evolutionary relationships
because when we made the trait based system we didn’t know about extinct life
and lots of dead shit defies categorization
so now we just say what’s related to what to classify it
as such, you always remain a part of the group you evolved from
new branches on the tree are still part of the branch they came from!
birds are a dinosaur branch
they evolved from the most recent common ancestor that all dinosaurs share, so they’re dinosaurs!
we have the entire transition from first dinosaur to bird well documented and birds are firmly nested in the dinosaur tree - as in, they are a very specific branch of theropods more closely related to things like Velociraptor than anything else!
most “traditional” dinosaurs were very birdie themselves and could be called birds by someone just guessing!
birds are dinosaurs, because they are in the dinosaur clade - aka, family group!
and the evolutionary story of dinosaurs didn’t stop 66 million years ago! it continued through the cenozoic and dinosaurs are arguably doing better than ever in this made up “mammals vs dinosaurs” dichotomy, bc there’s twice as many species of them as there are mammals!
the age of dinosaurs never ended! it just took to the skies!
